Spirituality of Finance

Dear Colleagues,

I would love to hear your thoughts about our discussion yesterday on Finance.

  • Please share one take-away from the conversation on finance.
  • Reflect and share on the role of Mission and its impact on how one stewards the resources of a school.
  • What more would you like to know/experience in regards to financial stewardship?

  1. "Our community already has everything it needs in order to thrive." While this is such a simple concept it provides immense relief. Changing this perspective empowers a school community. From a financial standpoint, this encourages leaders to place appreciation over expectation.

Mission should be at the heart of every financial decision. The Mission encompasses the core values of a school and by making it the reference point for financial decisions; stewards ensure the security of school resources.

Financial stewardship is a topic I know very little about so I would like to learn as much as possible! While I believe it is vital to relay on the expertise of others, I would like to know how financial stewards maintain an awareness of all the comings and goings of school resources. How much time do they devote to finances and what system do they use to keep it all straight?

  2. The thought of being responsible for the financial viability of a school is frightening to me. I appreciated Ken's honesty about making sure that as principal you have someone with financial knowledge helping on the Finance committee and advising you to make the right financial decisions that further the true mission of the school.

I feel that I need to ask to be further involved in the finance meetings of the school. I have seen the Profit and Loss report but feel that being more involved would help me have a greater understanding of the needs of the school.

Having a open communication with the school community about the finances of the school is also very important. I think parents don't realize the costs to run the school and having a yearly meeting highlighting the income and expenses develops a deeper bond between the principal and the school community.

  3. Please share one take-away from the conversation on finance. - I don't have to have a master's in finance to run the school. The school has a wonderful support team to help guide my decisions for the well being of the school. I'm sure it is not easy, and it will be stressful, but with an open mind, a spread sheet, and the support of others, God will help us lead the way for our school.

Reflect and share on the role of Mission and its impact on how one stewards the resources of a school. - Julie and I have both spoken to our principal about how we would like to further participate in our finance and parent meetings. As leaders of the school, I feel like it would benefit not only us, but the students and the school to better understand its need, it current ups and downs, and where it heads in the future months and year. These meetings communicate the importance of the schools mission and future direction.

What more would you like to know/experience in regards to financial stewardship? - I'd like to further review the current schools budget with my principal, vice principal, and book keeper to learn about our current strengths. I think this would help me to better understand where our schools tuition and monies go.
